A Caffeinated Nod to St. Drogo: The Patron Saint of Coffee
We all thank God for coffee, but what about St. Drogo? Well, Saint Drogo is officially recognized as the patron saint of coffee, and we think he deserves a round of applause, too. But who was this guy? And how can we ever thank him enough?
Who Was Saint Drogo?
Saint Drogo (1105–1186) was a humble Flemish shepherd who dedicated his life to faith, self-discipline, and service. Known for his extreme asceticism, he lived as a hermit, surviving on minimal sustenance—yet somehow, he was said to be in two places at once! (Now, that’s a skill we could all use before our first cup of coffee.)
Drogo became the patron saint of coffee, shepherds, and even the unattractive (yes, really!). His deep devotion and resilience made him an inspiring figure, and today, coffee lovers everywhere give him a nod with every sip.
Why Is He the Patron Saint of Coffee?
The connection between Saint Drogo and coffee isn’t totally clear, but some say it’s because of the long, grueling days he spent in solitude—where a strong cup of coffee would have been a blessing. Others believe it’s tied to the medieval coffeehouses that became popular gathering spots for lively discussions and deep contemplation, much like the spiritual solitude that Drogo embraced. Either way, we’re grateful for the connection!

Shocked and Grateful!!!! Just being honest… I figured it’d be okay but just a regular coffee. Yeah, honestly, I was shocked! That’s a really good dark roast. God knows serious coffee drinkers are very serious about their coffee! Hahaha! Thanks for putting this coffee on my radar; genuinely, a surprisingly great now favored morning cup of flavorful dark roast.
